For Italian history, industrial modernity has meant the discovery of new forms of mobility in terms of places, modalities, and imaginaries linked to the idea of displacement. New infrastructures, jobs, means of transportation, and knowledge reshaped traditional geographies and landscapes, drastically changing the aspect of the country.
This panel proposal springs from the PRIN 2017 Project Audiovisual archives of the South and deals with non-fiction films produced between 1948 and 1968. It aims to investigate the representations that have concurred to create and make familiar a new idea of mobility, particularly focusing on Southern Italy, by analyzing the role that new media and technologies of the period had in eliciting forms of subjectivity that conflicted with the traditional ones and gave shape to the peculiar Italian modernity.
